Economist David McWilliams argues in this book that the invention of money ranks up there with the discovery of fire. And his history, which traces money’s evolution from scratches on a stick to cryptocurrency, makes a strong argument. After all, nothing incites more cooperation and conflict than money, and it underpins all of our capabilities and efforts, no matter the ideology that is our conscious motivation, be it religious, political or tribal.
And most people’s understanding of money is limited, at best. (Hence their conflation of a money supply with a checking account.) And most people couldn’t tell you why being an international reserve currency is better than being a mere national coinage, let alone how the movement of capital across national borders affects international relations.
Luckily, this book explains all that (or at least defines the mechanisms involved), which is why it appeals to me, and I wish it were required reading for everyone who votes.
